Like me, I'm sure that thinking about your children’s futures on this Earth causes you a great deal of stress. What’s the point of making them a savings account & worrying about college when climate change & human trafficking surrounds them every day? I can’t fix the entire world, and neither can you. But together, we can do more than we could apart.

Right now, my two favorite nonprofits are involved with fighting for wildlife and fighting against human trafficking. They are local as well. They are Fellow Mortals & Finding Jasper! 

Fellow mortals is currently one of the largest wildlife hospitals in the state & the nation.  Where other similar-sized facilities employ volunteers for animal care, who may only see the animals one day a week for a few-hour shift, wildlife admitted to Fellow Mortals receives care from a limited number of knowledgeable and experienced professionals who see the animals nearly every day.  Where other facilities admit wildlife and then transfer it elsewhere for care, wildlife admitted to Fellow Mortals stay at the hospital from admit to release. 

Fellow Mortals’ operating principles are based on one simple belief:  individual life is precious. Following that principle means that providing professional care is the first imperative and professional care costs money.  Where most other facilities have given up on the idea of funding professional staff, Fellow Mortals does not accept that professional care is an “option,” but believes that it is just as important as providing proper nutrition and caging. 

Fellow Mortals is a living philosophy, and their staff and interns work every day to put that philosophy into practice through rehabilitation, education and research.  Their goal is to inspire other rehabilitators and facilities who see the possibilities in their approach. The truth is that sex trafficking is real. It impacts every age and demographic, and it thrives in America.  Human trafficking is filled with unspeakable horrors. The traffickers perpetrating violence and facilitating exploitation depend upon a society that chooses to look the other way. Finding Jasper exists to change that by looking right at the issue—rescuing children, women and men from sex trafficking and getting them on the road to healing.   

Like jasper, each child, woman and man is precious in the eyes of the God who created them. They believe those trapped in the darkness of the sex trade deserve to experience the true beauty and freedom of life outside the emotional, mental, and physical abuse of human trafficking. 

They pass no judgment on the trafficked or traffickers. Rather, they exist to offer hope and freedom to every single individual enslaved in the sex trade regardless of their history or apparent status in the industry. Their mission is to find jasper—searching the darkness and seeking out the precious ones, to offer them hope, freedom and a new life.

On their website www.findingjasper.com they have a catalog of all kinds of gifts that human trafficking victims need to help get them get out, like phones & uber rides. Also, the things they need once they're safely out, like food and clothing. The gifts range from $15-$12,000. So whatever you can personally contribute will help no matter what. 

Educate your kids on human trafficking and tell them what to look out for and how to stay safe! Show them how you're helping someone come out of it alive.
